Ah, the age-old question: buy or rent? This discussion (or argument) typically centers around comparing the costs of each. Although important, we want to put away our calculators for this post and discuss the non-financial benefits & cost of buying vs. renting.
Privacy
Renting typically involves living in a small(er) space right next to strangers. After just a few late night encounters on the stairwell or screaming thru the walls, people start contemplating paying the “premium” to buy their own place. You are not just buying physical property, you are also buying the space around it. And for some, that can be priceless.
Independence
This, again, can go both ways but if you are not handy, or just too busy, then having somebody deal with issues for you is a huge benefit of renting. Others, however, may enjoy getting their hands dirty and doing the job themselves… or at least do it on their time. Making your own decisions on when & how things get done is can be infinitely more valuable than dealing with a pesky landlord. Plus your decisions can be bigger & more permanent.
At the end of the day, it’s up to you and your unique situation. Be financially responsible, but it is certainly not all about the money. Either way, you can count on us to move you to your new rented apartment, your starter home, or your dream home.
